Mixed Martial Arts Competition Rules

A s ma ndated by the New Mexico State Athletic Commiss ion.

Scoring:

Bouts are scor ed by th ree jud ges u sing a ten (1 0) point must system in that the win ner of

a given roun d receives ten (10 ) points and his opp onen t receives nine ( 9) or less, based

on effective striking, grappling, aggression , and cage or ring contr ol.

Amateur no n - title fight s will consist of t hree (3) , three (3) min ute , roun ds and amateu r

title fights will co nsist o f five (5 ) , th ree (3) min ute , rou nds with Commission ap proval .

Professional no n - title fights will co nsist of th ree (3) , five (5) min ute , rou nds and

professional title figh ts will con sist of five (5) , f ive (5) minute , ro unds.

Bout duration is subject to change by the Commission d epending o n co ntractual

agreements and time constraints.

A minimum one minute rest period will be given between round s which may b e extended

as need ed at the discretion of the referee.

Mandatory Equipment:

In b oth amateur a nd professio nal competition , comp e titors may on ly u se

commission app roved 4 - 6 oz Mixed Martial Ar ts gloves wh ich ar e design ed to pr otect the

han d but not large eno ugh to impro ve the strikin g surface or the weigh t of the pun ch.

Hand wrapping is allowed but not requir ed. Hand wraps must b e inspected and

signed by a Commission Appr oved Dep uty In spector prior to e a ch fight . Once a fighter’s

han d wrap pin g s are in sp ected an d sign ed b y a Deputy Inspector the figh ter must remain

in the designated locker room until the fight. Figh ters who mus t leave the designated

locker room for whatever reaso n after their h and wraps h ave been inspected and signed

by a Depu ty In sp ector must be escort ed from the locker room an d back b y a Deputy

Inspecto r or a Commission er. Failure to do so will invalidate pre v iou sly in spected hand

wrap pings and may resu lt in a Commissio ned directed r e - wrapping of a fighter ’ s h and s

a nd re - inspection of said hand wrappings.

Commission approved M ixed M ar tial A rts shorts o r kickb oxing trunks are the

only uniforms allowed to be worn into the competition area by f ighter s . Shirts, gis , sh oes

and the prob lems they present for gr abbing are not allowed , (except in b outs involving

female competitors, wh o are allowed to wear Commission approv ed shirts. In th ese

circumstances th rows o r submissions using the shirt are con sidered f ouls.) A mo uth

guar d & a h ard plastic pro tective groin cup are man dated as required equipment in all

M ixed M artial A rts comp etition sanctioned by the N ew M exico State Ath letic

Commission , regardless of the gen der of th e comp etitor .

Amateur Competition Fouls:

1. Elbow strikes of any kin d .

2. Knee strikes to the head.

3. Up - kicking to the groin, neck or head of an opponent .

4. Kicking a grounded opponent, i.e. three or more points of contact on the mat.

5. B utting with the head , (to any part of the opponent’s body . )

6 . Eye gouging of any kind.

7 . Biting .

8 . Hair pulling.

9 . Fish Hooking.

10. Groin attacks of any kind. (Intentional v. Acci dental for point deduct./disqual. )

1 1 . Putting a finger into any o rifice or into any cut or laceration on an opponent.

1 2 . Small joint manipulation (two digits or less.)

1 3 . Strik ing to the spine or the back of the head ;( Between the ears fr. Neck - Crown . )

1 4 . Throat strikes of any kind including grabbing the trachea.

1 5 . Clawing, pinching or twisting the flesh.

1 6 . Grabbing the clavicle.

1 7 . Stomping a grounded opponent. (See rule #4.)

1 8 . Kicking to the kidney with the heel , (even on a standing opponent . )

1 9 . Spiking an opponent to the canvas on his head or neck. ( Sla ms w/an a rc =no spike .)

20 . Throwing an opponent out of the ring or fenced area.

2 1 . Holding the shorts or gloves of an opponent ; (Gripping the fabric.)

2 2 . Spitting at an opponent.

2 3 . Engaging in u nsportsmanlike conduct of any kind , i.e.: climbing on t he cage .

2 4 . Holding the ropes or the fence (to gain, maintain or avoid a position) .

25. Using abusive language in the ring or fenced area.

2 6 . Attacking an opponent on or during a break , i.e. break on command .

2 7 . Attacking an opponent who is under the c are of the referee.

2 8 . Attacking an opponent after the bell/horn has sounded , i.e. break on command .

2 9 . Flagrantly disregarding the instructions of the referee, i.e. break on command.

30 . Timidity to include, without limitation, avoiding contact with an opponent,

intentionally or consistently dropping the mouthpiece or faking an injury.

3 1 . Interference by the corner to include throwing in the towel during competition .

3 2 . Energy drinks in the corner .

3 3 . Unapproved writing on the body or attire

Fi ghters are allowed up to five minutes recovery time subsequent to groin strikes or any other foul

committed which in the referee’s opinion require s recovery time before the fight is to continue. When

a fighter who is in a dominant position commits a foul , said fighter shall lose the dominant position at

the restart. When the fighters are in neutral position s on the ground during a foul , the referee shall , at

his discretion, either place the fighters back into their last neutral position s on the ground, or into

neutral standing positions , at the restart. Fighters are reminded that they are responsible for their

weapon s and are expected to u se said weapons fairly.

Professional Competition Fouls:

1. Butting with the head.

2. Eye gouging of any kind.

3. Biting.

4. Hair pulling.

5. Fish hooking.

6. Groin attacks of any kind.

7. Putting a finger into any orifice or into any cut or laceration on an opponent.

8. Small joint manipulation , (two digits or less . )

9. Striking to the spine or t he back of the head ;(Between the ears fr. Neck - Crown.)

10. Striking downward using the point of the elbow ; (vertical path ) .

11. Throat strikes of any kind, including, without limitation, grabbing the trachea.

12. Clawing, pinching or twisting the flesh.

13. Grabbing the clavicle.

14. Kicking the head of a grounded opponent. (Three points on mat=grounded.)

15. Kneeing the head of a grounded opponent. (Three points on mat=grounded.)

16. Stomping a grounded opponent. (Three points on contact on mat=grou nded.)

17. Kicking to the kidney with the heel.

18. Spiking an opponent to the canvas on his head or neck . (Slams w/an arc=no spike.)

19. Throwing an opponent out of the ring or fenced area.

20. Holding the shorts or gloves of an opponent ; (Gripping th e fabric . )

21. Spitting at an opponent.

22. Engaging in an unsportsmanlike conduct that causes an injury to an opponent.

23. Holding the ropes or the fence (to gain, maintain or avoid a position . )

24. Using abusive language in the ring or fenced area.

25. Attacking an opponent on or during the break.

26. Attacking an opponent who is under the care of the referee.

27. Attacking an opponent after the bell /horn has sounded the end of a round.

28. Flagrantly disregarding the instructions of the referee.

29. Timidity, including, without limitation, avoiding contact with an opponent,

intentionally or consistently dropping the mouthpiece or faking an injury.

Ways To Win

1. Via Submission:

- Physical tap out. Tap anywhere with an open hand or foot ; (3 or mor e rapid and distinct

taps ; tapping with a fist on your opponent will be considered a punch and not be recognized

as a tap out .)

- Verbal Submission/ Verbal T ap O ut : If you can not tap physically, do so verbally by

saying the word, “tap,” loudly and re peatedly until the fight is stopped . If you are caught in a

submission/position where there is a concern for your safety, any vocalization that you make

will be considered a verbal tap out. Execute escapes quickly and quietly. (Also for fighters

who do n ot speak English.)

2. Technical knockout by the referee stopping the contest.

- A competitor must be able to demonstrate an active defen se . (Covering up , “going fetal”

or simply not responding while receiving repeated strikes is not deemed as an active d efen se . )

4 . Disqualification.

Members of the Cage/Ring crew will inspect each fighter before each fight for the

following:

- Excessive lubricant on the head/face

- Mouth guard

- Groin Protector

- Length of finger/toe n ails

- NMSAC Approved MMA Gloves & Attire

Referee may Re - start the Round :

If the fighters reach a stalemate on the ground or in a standing clinch and do not work to

improve position or to finish the fight, the referee may call for a, “clean break,” and resta rt

the fight after placing the competitors into neutral , standing positions . The official time will

not be interrupted during a restart of this nature. Standard commands that fighter s can expect

to he a r from the referee during a fight are as follow s :

“ F ight ” - “ Break ” - “ Clean Break ” - “ Fight Back ” (TKO) - “Defend” (TKO) - “ Work to

Improve /Finish ” (Restart) - “Let go of the gloves/shorts/fence” - “ B ack of the head” -

“Not the eyes /cup/spine ” - “ 3 points down” - “Get Out Of It,” (TKO Submis sion)

No more than two trainers will be allowed in a fighter’s corner once the fight starts. Trainers

must remain seated during the fight. Trainers are reminded to address their fighter only .

Questions/grievances are to be submitted to the commissioner’ s table.

F ighter s are reminded to defend thems el ves at all times, to obey the commands of the referee

at all times, to fight clean, to fight hard, to fight fair and to start fighting only when the

referee commands them to fight.

 


Weight classes: 

Fly weight - over 115 lbs. to 135 lbs
Bantam weight - over 125 lbs. to 135 lbs
Jr. Light weight - over 135 lbs. to 145 lbs.
Light weight - over 145 lbs. to 155 lbs
Welterweight - over 155 lbs. to 170 lbs.
Middleweight - over 170 lbs. to 185 lbs.
Light Heavy weight - over 185 lbs. to 205 lbs.
Heavy weight - over 205 lbs. to 235 lbs.
Super Heavy weight - over 235 lbs. to 265 lbs.
Xtreme Super Heavy weight - over 265 lbs.
